Our Approach to Math Competitions

At Orlando Math Circle, math competitions are an extension of our core philosophy: thinking deeply, collaborating, and building confidence. We view competitions not as high-pressure events, but as opportunities for students to challenge themselves, explore new strategies, and grow as problem solvers.

We support students through preparation sessions, practice groups, and competition opportunities across multiple grade levels. Whether a student is competing for the first time or refining advanced skills, our focus is on learning, reflection, and community.

Benefits of Math Competitions

Math competitions offer students a chance to explore challenging problems, develop creative strategies, and grow as confident problem solvers. At Orlando Math Circle, competitions are approached as learning experiences—emphasizing curiosity, collaboration, and thoughtful reflection rather than pressure or rankings. Students are supported through preparation, practice, and community every step of the way.

Builds Deep Problem-Solving Skills
Math competitions challenge students to think creatively, make connections across topics, and persist through unfamiliar problems. Rather than memorization, students learn strategies, reasoning, and how to approach complex questions with confidence.

Encourages Growth, Confidence, and Resilience
Competitions help students develop perseverance and a healthy relationship with challenge. Students learn to reflect on mistakes, adapt strategies, and celebrate progress—skills that transfer far beyond mathematics.

Creates Community and Motivation
Participating in competitions connects students with peers who share similar interests and curiosity. Through preparation sessions and team-based experiences, students gain motivation, mentorship, and a sense of belonging within a supportive math community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the names of the different programs within the OMC mean? Which program should I register for? +

Program names reflect a combination of grade level, focus, and learning style. Some programs are designed around age bands (such as upper elementary, middle school, or high school), while others focus on a specific theme—such as problem solving, competition preparation, modeling, or girls-focused enrichment.

If you’re unsure which program is the best fit:

  • Choose based on your child’s current grade level rather than advanced coursework alone
  • Consider whether your child prefers exploration and discussion or structured competition prep
  • Reach out to us—we’re happy to help guide families to the best placement

Our goal is to place students where they will feel challenged, supported, and excited to participate.

During what times of the year are math circles held? +

Math circles are typically offered throughout the school year, with sessions running in the fall and spring. Some programs meet weekly, while others are offered in short series or special cycles depending on age group and format.

In addition to the school-year sessions, we also offer summer programs, workshops, competitions, and community events, giving students opportunities to stay engaged year-round. Updated schedules and registration dates are always posted on our website.

How can I open a Math Circle in my school or area? +

We love hearing from educators and community members who want to bring math circles to their schools. Opening a math circle doesn’t require a special curriculum or expensive materials—what matters most is a commitment to curiosity, collaboration, and student-centered learning.

To get started:

  • Identify a small group of interested students and a consistent meeting time
  • Find a facilitator who enjoys guiding discussion rather than lecturing
  • Start with open-ended problems, puzzles, or games that encourage exploration

If you’d like support, Orlando Math Circle is happy to share guidance, resources, and best practices based on our experience. We have a guide for opening a Match Circle and step by steps. Contact us to learn more about partnerships, mentorship, or training opportunities.
