Math in Action

Math Festivals

Math festivals are interactive, hands-on events that invite students, families, and communities to experience mathematics as playful, creative, and social. Instead of worksheets or lectures, participants explore puzzles, games, and challenges at their own pace—working together, asking questions, and discovering the joy of problem solving.

Math festivals are designed to be welcoming for all ages and experience levels, making them a powerful entry point into deeper math engagement and enrichment.

Math Festivals

OMC hosts and supports interactive math festivals and outreach events that invite families and communities to experience mathematics through hands-on activities, games, and exploration. These events highlight math as creative, social, and joyful.

Math Becomes Playful and Accessible
Math festivals invite students and families to experience mathematics through hands-on puzzles, games, and challenges—removing fear and pressure while showing that math can be joyful, creative, and approachable for all learners.

Families and Communities Learn Together
Unlike traditional classes, math festivals bring students, parents, volunteers, and educators together in a shared experience. This builds stronger community connections and helps families see how curiosity, collaboration, and problem solving can thrive beyond the classroom.

New Pathways Into Math Are Created
Math festivals often serve as a student’s first connection to deeper math enrichment. They spark interest, build confidence, and open doors to ongoing programs like math circles, classes, and competitions—especially for students who may not otherwise seek them out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the names of the different programs within the OMC mean? Which program should I register for? +

Program names reflect a combination of grade level, focus, and learning style. Some programs are designed around age bands (such as upper elementary, middle school, or high school), while others focus on a specific theme—such as problem solving, competition preparation, modeling, or girls-focused enrichment.

If you’re unsure which program is the best fit:

  • Choose based on your child’s current grade level rather than advanced coursework alone
  • Consider whether your child prefers exploration and discussion or structured competition prep
  • Reach out to us—we’re happy to help guide families to the best placement

Our goal is to place students where they will feel challenged, supported, and excited to participate.

During what times of the year are math circles held? +

Math circles are typically offered throughout the school year, with sessions running in the fall and spring. Some programs meet weekly, while others are offered in short series or special cycles depending on age group and format.

In addition to the school-year sessions, we also offer summer programs, workshops, competitions, and community events, giving students opportunities to stay engaged year-round. Updated schedules and registration dates are always posted on our website.

How can I open a Math Circle in my school or area? +

We love hearing from educators and community members who want to bring math circles to their schools. Opening a math circle doesn’t require a special curriculum or expensive materials—what matters most is a commitment to curiosity, collaboration, and student-centered learning.

To get started:

  • Identify a small group of interested students and a consistent meeting time
  • Find a facilitator who enjoys guiding discussion rather than lecturing
  • Start with open-ended problems, puzzles, or games that encourage exploration

If you’d like support, Orlando Math Circle is happy to share guidance, resources, and best practices based on our experience. We have a guide for opening a Match Circle and step by steps. Contact us to learn more about partnerships, mentorship, or training opportunities.
