Internship Week #2

OMC interns representing local high schools and UCF worked on creating a first annual OMC Girls Math Competition for 3rd and 4th grade girls.. They worked in a comfortable environment the whole week, thanks to the generosity of our location sponsors, Tim Tutoring and Test Prep. They worked as a group using design thinking and process as well as the Scrum project management method which relies on a self-organizing, cross-functional team. In this type of team everyone is needed to take a feature from idea to implementation. The scrum team is self-organizing in that there is no overall team leader who decides which person will do which task or how a problem will be solved. Those are issues that are decided by the team as a whole.
OMC students showed great respect for each other, cooperated, collaborated and were able to produce the following :

  • rough draft for 25 competition problems
  • additional practice problems
  • Girls Math Contest Logo
  • website for the math competition and anything #girlsinmath related, www.girlsinmath.org
  • registration form
  • check in app
  • budget
  • competition flier
  • bookmark for competition
  • participation certificate
  •  started venue search
  • started writing event script
  • Sponsorship benefits

The big issues that are not yet solved are:

  • Set date and venue
  • Figure out how to get low income students to participate? How to solve the transportation issue?
  • Should OMC ask teachers from Title 1 schools to help bring students? Would teachers be willing to do this?
  • What prize structure to have?
  • T-shirt and banner design
  • Which businesses to approach for sponsorship and what levels of sponsorship should there be?

OMC interns will continue to work online on the OMC Slack workspace until they will meet again at the end of July. The goal is to run the competition some time at the end of September or in October. Bravo to our awesome student interns! We are so proud of the progress you have made this week!

A big thank you to our interns who stayed to volunteer for the roll out of our first Math Collaboration event with Girls’ Angle Math Cirlce from Cambridge, MA. This was a super fun live math event created by founder of Girls’ Angle, Dr. Ken Fan. Thank you to Girls Angle for sponsoring our first collaboration and thank you to Winter Parl Public Library for hosting it!
