Boys & Girls Club: Prottle

Girls’ Math Competition - Tampa

Prottle: Problem Solving Event

A lively Prottle (Problem Solving Battle) brought kids together for a fun, team-based math challenge inspired by Slovak math camps and the international competition Náboj. Using Math Kangaroo problems, teams raced to solve questions, earn tokens, and advance through a fast-paced, game-like competition. The event fostered collaboration, creativity, and friendly competition—turning problem solving into an exciting community experience.
2-Day Leadership Retreat

Orlando Math Circle’s leadership team gathered for a dynamic two-day retreat filled with collaboration, learning, and fun. The weekend combined strategic planning sessions, program development workshops, and team-building activities—from designing new Prottle packets and planning upcoming math events to solving puzzles together at an escape room. Leaders also gained hands-on experience by running a live community Prottle event, wrapping up the retreat with renewed energy and shared vision for the year ahead.

Math Collaboration
Thank you to Girls’ Angle and its founder Dr. Ken Fan for creating this fun math collaboration for OMC and for sponsoring it! It was hard but it was worth the satisfaction of figuring it all out. Students had to solve 36 problems to get a secret message with a question/ clue for the final answer- a code that unlocked a virtual door on our computer. After the door was unlocked, all the students received a happy cube puzzle as a prize.

Three Day Workshop
Hey parents, let’s get our girls excited about math! Enroll your daughter in Orlando Math Circle’s Three Day Workshop, where she will engage in fun, enriching activities to challenge her mathematical mind to solve problems creatively. Of course, boys are welcome too.
School math lessons can only give our students so much. Beyond the classroom, students need time to explore, to be creative and play with math in an environment where measures of ‘productivity’ do not lie in the right answer, but in the process of getting there with expectations for fun discovery.

The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.
The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 10.

How Does Math Make Up the Code Behind Physics' Natural Laws of Our Universe?
Physics studies the natural laws of our universe. Mathematics is a language to describe physics laws at the most fundamental level – the laws of numbers. Great scientific advancement often demands that physicists and mathematicians work hand in hand.
NASA Scientist, Dr. Yu, will present an interactive talk intended for middle school student and older. High school students and college students can contact us to find out how to receive community service hours for attending this lecture.

What is AMC 8?
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.
If your school does not offer the AMC -8 competition, you can register to take the test with Orlando Math Circle.

Developing Extreme Math Talent, Talk & Workshop with Dr. Loh
Dr. Po-Shen Loh, National Coach of the USA Math Olympiad Team, ranked #1 in the world 2015 & 2016, was scheduled to give a presentation to the Florida Association for the Gifted before Hurricane Irma cancelled the conference. But Developing Extreme Math Talent can’t be stopped by extreme weather, and Dr. Po-Shen Loh will join Orlando Math Circle this Saturday, September 16, to share his vision for bringing the majority of Americans to a math level currently attained only by the top 1%.
After his talk on Developing Extreme Math Talent, Po will host a special problem-solving workshop for students as a preview for the upcoming Who Wants to Be a Mathematician contest.

Orlando Math Circle presented a talk about “Math and Creativity” by Dr. Po-Shen Loh.
Po-Shen Loh is a math enthusiast and evangelist, operating across the entire mathematical spectrum from original research to mass education. He is a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where he researches topics in combinatorics, probability, and computer science. He also works with Mathematical Association of America as the national coach of the USA Math Olympiad team. He extends his activity to the global mainstream through the new educational technology platform Expii.com, delivering free creative math puzzles and personalized math practice on every Internet device.

Guest Speaker - Dr. Jami Valentine
One of the ways OMC engages students in mathematics is by bringing guest speakers to discuss math-related careers and projects to the students. On March 18th, Dr. Jami Valentine, a physicist who works for the US Patent and Trademark office, gave a talk to the Meadowbrook Middle School students. Dr. Valentine earned a master’s degree at Brown University, then went to Johns Hopkins University, where she studied the spin properties of rare earth metals under Professor C.L. Chien. In 2006 Jami became the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics from Johns Hopkins University.
